North Berwick 19 - 49 St Dunstans

Iain A Dove18 Oct 2014 - 18:55

Today we played host to St Dunstan's a team from south London

North Berwick started the game with a squad who have never played together before today and unfortunately St Dunstans started very strong. This resulted in N.B. losing a quick try in the first 3 three minutes with St Dunstans having a pick off the back of the ruck on our 10 m line. They then charged over the line to score a well worked try. N.B tried to assert themselves in the game and were spurred on by a rampant 20 yard charge by Greg only for us to lose the ball in the ruck. This gave St Dunstans the chance to exploit the space left by a sleeping N.B. defence and their No.13 ran in a try from 30 yards. This gave St Dunstans the opportunity to throw everything at us and with sustained pressure St Dunstans were awarded a scrum on our 22 which resulted in a No8 pick up and another well worked try. Again St Dunstans gained confidence and every player tried to get on the score sheet as they again threw the kitchen sink at us only to be stopped time and again by our captain Finlay Ramsay, Jed and Dave S. Then with several minutes left on the clock St Dunstans scored from a penalty on our 5 m line. yet again St Dunstans continued to play some good rugby then started to attack our wingers only to be stopped dead by Kyle time and again.

The 2nd twenty minutes looked to be the same story as the first as St Dunstans scored a try from a peel of the back of the line-out. Most teams would drop their heads after being played off the pitch in every position but not this squad. After another period of sustained pressure by St Dunstans N.B. then managed to get back into the game then rode their luck with breakthrough led by Ben Moffat's up & under which was chased by our speed machine Bank, who after some nice footwork scored a try from nothing. This strengthened St Dunstans resolve as again their No.13 charged through a couple of tackles to score another quality try. It was at this point when N.B. woke up and started to play. After a long period of pressure by N.B we pushed St Dunstans into their own half only for them to break the game line and score a try from 40 m against the run of play

The 3rd period was a totally different game as N,B. started to play the style of rugby we all know that they are capable of, and started to put St Dunstans under immense pressure and really started to play some good rugby. With some good back play from the two Robbie's and Dave S we managed to release Bank for him to score a try from 20 m. From then on N.B. had the game mostly sewn up as the tackles started to fly in and we put up a brick wall in defence. Then again out of nowhere Bank popped up to score his well deserved Hat-trick from 30 m. From this point on N.B. had St Dunstans on the ropes but could not capitalise on their possession

Summary
N.B. had 3 year groups on the pitch today so there were players who had never met each other before never mind play together!!!
Although it took a good 25 minutes for N.B. to wake up and realise there was a game to play. I was impressed in how they eventually pulled together and fought hard for each other. St Dunstans had some really big laddies in their squad but we were not intimidated by them and we tackled them hard.
We had four S2's in today's squad and not one of them looked out of place as they all played very well. A special mention must go to Eck and Charlie who played in the front-row which is not easy at the best of times never mind playing up a year!!!!! . Fraser also played well as the forwards did not protect him like they should have, and Matt & Gordon both excelled
Today gave us coaches another look at next years U-16 squad and I truly believe with a few more games together under their belt this squad could go far in next years cup run

P.S. I would like to thank our junior Ref John Gardner as he was very efficient and handled today's game with maturity beyond his years.
