North Berwick 70 – 5 Langholm Following a hard fought away win at Linlithgow North Berwick welcomed Langholm to Recreation Park on Saturday.

North Berwick were forced to make several changes from last weeks winning starting fifteen, but it shows the depth in the squad when the players coming in are equally as good as those they are replacing, and it was also good to see some of those competing for a place in the 1sts getting a run out for the Seconds on the neighbouring pitch.

Grant Craig returned at Fly half, Graeme Fairgrieve on the wing and Matt Sanderson at second row. Robbie Mercer also started at prop, with Al Gallagher ready to come on from the bench.

North Berwick started with a bang, and after receiving the kick off from Langholm were able to produce quick ball from several rucks eventually feeding Murray West wide on the Left Wing. He produced a fine finish to hand off 2 oncoming tacklers whilst flirting with the left touchline and stayed in play, he then aimed towards the posts to give Craig an easier conversion. Home team advantage with 2 minutes played NB 7 – 0 Langholm.

North Berwick continued to pressurise the Langholm defence and through the forwards scored their second try with prop Reece Patterson getting his name on the board (12 – 0). Langholm did make one good break when their openside flanker hit a good line in midfield, but an excellent cover tackle by Jamie Dove and then good counter rucking by the covering defence alleviated the pressure. North Berwick were able to take advantage of a yellow card awarded against the Langholm number 5 and another against their prop 10 minutes later. Murray West and Reece Patterson both scored their second tries, and Graeme Fairgreive also crashed over to take North Berwicks lead to 29 points (2 of the 5 tries being converted). Langholm then got on the scoreboard also with a well worked catch and drive from a lineout to take the halftime scores to NB 29 – Langholm 5.

Playing down the slope towards the clubhouse in the second half, North Berwick looked to play in the right areas. Stand Off Grant Craig was able to kick deep and put the team in good positions to add more points.

A further 7 tries were scored in a dominant second half performance from the home team. Murray West scored another brace in the second half to match that of the first to finish on 4 tries for the second time this season. Kyle Hamilton scored twice also and solo efforts from Leo Gordon (who made a great impact from the bench against a tiring Langholm defence) Jamie Dove and Grant Spence concluded the scoring.

Of the seven tries scored in the second half, Craig converted three to take the final score to NB 70 – 5 Langholm. Another solid performance from North Berwick, and Langholm were not helped by ill discipline which cost them two trips to the sin bin and a second yellow resulting in a red for their No5. But there is still plenty to work on this coming week for what promises to be a very tough game against unbeaten League Leaders Dalkeith this weekend.
